Victorian Bushfires Take Away Doctor from Setting up Medical Service in Darwin

Monday February 16, 2009

Rob Pierce, 62, was to set up a respiratory service in Darwin in May, but has gone missing after the 2009 Victorian bushfires hit his hometown of St Andrews.

He had been collaborating with the Lung Foundation and Health Department at the Royal Darwin Hospital to begin a respiratory service aimed at improving Indigenous Australians' respiratory health.

"Colleagues in Darwin will remember Professor Pierce as an 'all-round good guy' and an advocate for both specialist services and those who need them – particularly the Indigenous Australian population,' said Len Notaras, Royal Darwin Hospital general manager.

Darwin and Northern Territory citizens are taking it upon themselves to help lessen the catastrophic effects cause by the recent bushfires.

Mums Julia Kostanjevec and Charmaine Gardner, have recently organised a toy drive to alleviate the trauma that kids may be experiencing in the area.

"I know when my kids are stressed, I'm stressed and when my kids are happy, I'm happy…and a toy always makes a kid happy," Julia told Darwin's Northern Territory News.

For more information about how you can donate toys to the fund, call Julia Kostanjevec on 0416 399 411.
