Boy Drowns in Swollen Creek in Darwin

Tuesday February 17, 2009

A boy drowned last night after he was dragged by rapids down a flooded creek in Darwin about 5pm.

Paramedics, police and Darwin Watch Commander, Gavin Kennedy, resuscitated the boy, who was swept down Rapid Creek near Yankee Hole and White Rocks.

He later died in Royal Darwin Hospital where he was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

Many swimmers and tube riders were at the creek at the time that the boy drowned and were told to leave after the incident.

"I didn't see what actually happened at the creek but you could tell it wasn't very good as people were standing around crying, and the police and ambulance just surrounded the boy as they tried to resuscitate him," a bystander told the Northern Territory News in Darwin.

Superintendent Rob Farmer said people should take caution before they decide to swim in the creek.

"We have had a lot of rain and therefore the water is a lot faster and stronger than it normally is," he told the Northern Territory News.
