Darwin Bombing Anniversary Brings Back Memories For Some

Thursday February 19, 2009

Commemorating tomorrow's 67th anniversary of the Darwin bombings, a Darwin woman tells the story about her father's involvement in the Japanese bombing of Darwin during the Second World War.

"My father was so proud of being in the army, to protect his country," she said about the Darwin bombings in the Northern Territory News.

Mr Odegaard was a Black Watch member – a group of Indigenous men who had been training about how to protect the coastline – and when the bombs in Darwin began, he was in the frontline.

Yvonne Odegaard reported that her father went through a horrific experience and was very concerned about his loved ones during the Darwin bombings. In total, the Darwin bombings claimed 240 lives.

Born in Darwin, Mr Odegaard died in July 2001, aged 78.
