Darwin Police Officers Raise Money for Victorian Bushfire Appeal
Tuesday February 24, 2009
Police in Darwin and the Northern Territory have so far raised more than $10,000 for the Victorian bushfire victims by offering breath tests in the territory's pubs.
Officers offered Darwin pub patrons a breathalyser test if they made a donation to the Red Cross 2009 Victorian Bushfire fund.
Chief Commissioner Paul White, an officer breath-testing at Darwin pubs and clubs was pleased with the results of the effort
"(Friday) night's efforts were truly eye-opening," Mr White told the Northern Territory News in Darwin. "Within 45 minutes from commencing the collections, Red Cross management had to be called out to deliver more collection buckets.
"There were $100 notes being stuffed in to Red Cross collection buckets.
"There are reports that vehicles on McMillans Road [in Darwin] were deliberately moving lanes so they could be captured by the RBT and donate to the Victorian Bush Fires Appeal.
"This is testament to the kind nature of those individuals and the eagerness to assist those affected by this tragedy in Victoria."
