Darwin Walkway Given the Go Ahead Despite Strong Dislike For its Design

Friday February 27, 2009

A walkway that extends from Smith Street Mall in Darwin to Darwin's Waterfront has been approved by Darwin City Council without agreeing on its design.

The Darwin City Council meeting was heated on Tuesday night when council members voted for it to go ahead without knowing its final design.

After having been through three designs already, Alderman Heather Sjoberg called the first one an "embarrassment".

She also disagreed with the most recent design, which was lacking detail being only an artist's impression of the walkway.

"What I see is a huge amount of money to be spent on a few little sheds along a footpath," she told the Northern Territory News.

"I don't know who designed it, but it isn't someone who's experienced Darwin downpours," Sjoberg said, but voted for it to go ahead.

Now the $4million plan will be decided by a committee, as well as whatever company it is that wins a contract to construct it.

Known as the Smith Street Connection, the Darwin walkway will be a popular tourist attraction as it passes many of Darwin's most famous buildings such as the Parliament House, Brown's Mart and the Supreme Court.
