Darwin Nursery Wins National Training Award

Wednesday March 11, 2009

The Allora Gardens in Winnellie, Northern Territory won the trophy for ';exceptional commitment and exemplary attitude towards encouraging learning and development in their staff'; at the Nursery and Garden Industry Awards in Canberra.

Owner Estelle Cornell said Allora believed it was important to provide training for "those who have poor experience in a work or social environment" such as weeding, potting, basic gardening and selling.

"This helps rehabilitate them into society whilst also providing them with confidence and a sense of self-worth," Ms Cornell told the Northern Territory News.

"We often help the disabled and less fortunate because the value of human beings is more important than the dollar value of their work.
"We are not looking for a pat on the back - we're simply helping to regenerate and provide the opportunity to succeed."

Allora Gardens in the Northern Territory is a multi-award winning nursery and has become part of the Nursery & Garden Industry Australia's Hall of Fame.
