Darwin flights to Perth and Melbourne announced

Thursday March 12, 2009

Virgin Blue announced that it will start a route from Darwin to Perth and resume its direct service from Darwin to Melbourne in late April.

Jetstar was previously the only service on the Darwin to Melbourne route after Tiger Airways cancelled its service in October last year. Virgin Blue followed but is set to restart, offering tickets from Darwin to Melbourne for less that $99 on Thursday to celebrate.
Flights to Perth are also going cheap for $149.

Tourism Minister Chris Burns was happy with the announced services and said that, "The Virgin flights have the potential to bring an additional 2340 people into Darwin every week and that's fantastic news for tourism operators."

"Virgin will recommence its return service between Melbourne and Darwin which will provide competition on the same route, giving more choice to tourists and Territorians.

"Virgin's commitment to expanding its Territory services shows great confidence in the Territory tourism industry and the economy."

Northern Territory Airport chief executive Ian Kew was also pleased with the announcement telling the Northern Territory News that, "We are delighted with the announcement and have no doubt of the success of Virgin Blue's operations in Darwin."

"Victoria is one of Darwin's largest tourist markets, and indeed, there are close business links with Melbourne which should see a good uptake of Virgin's premium economy product."

There is also a wide range of flights available to choose from such as midnight, early morning and late afternoon flights to Melbourne, and morning flights to and from Perth.

In addition to daily Darwin to Brisbane flights, there will now be daily flights to Perth, and six flights a week to Melbourne.
