Northern Territory Crocodile Stalking Children

Sunday March 8, 2009

Northern Territory police have shot a large crocodile that was reported to have been following children and dogs.

Residents in the Northern Territory believe that the 4.5 saltwater crocodile is still alive after it was spotted yesterday by night patrol officer Wilfred Harris, 25, and his family members on Thursday morning.

"I've been told by people who saw it, that it is still around," he told the Northern Territory News. "I am very worried, we have kids who are pretty young walking around near the river," he said. "It nearly took my dog Snowy before half the community screamed at the dog to get away from the water.

"Three police came and Constable Mark Carey fired the shot, I think it caught it on the shoulder.

"It is still there, it was hanging around (yesterday) morning."

A Katherine, Northern Territory police superintendent Colin Smith said that Parks and Wildlife asked that police kill the reptile because they could not set up a trap in the area due to flooding.

He said he was not 100 per cent certain he had destroyed the massive crocodile but was confident that he had.

"In this case, it sank immediately, which is usually an indication - we can't be certain," he said in the Northern Territory. "I'm suggesting, that by the expertise of the person, that it was destroyed.

"There has been a report of a second croc - police are aware of that, as is the community."
