Northern Territory Site Set for Carbon Capture and Storage

Wednesday April 1, 2009

Northern Territory seabeds may become sites for holding greenhouse gases.

The Petrel Sub-basin may have two sites out of 10 that will be used for storing carbon emissions. One is close to Darwin.

Resources Minister Martin Ferguson said that this initiative will become a significant part of Australia's battle to reduce carbon emissions.

"Advancing storage technology and capacity is vital to the future of Australia's coal industry and ... it is also important for the oil and gas industry, and our energy-intensive industries," Mr Ferguson told the Northern Territory News.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson said that while Australia is still experimenting with this particular science, he was interested in opportunities in this field for the Northern Territory.

First scientists are trying to prove that they can monitor the carbon dioxide once injected into the deep subsurface, which they are doing in Australia's first demonstration project in Otway Basin, Victoria, carried out by CO2CRC.

Carbon capture and storage is the process of capturing and separating the carbon dioxide from the toxic emissions, compressing it into liquid, and injecting it into sites for storage.
