Town East of Darwin Ranked Best Place to Live
Tuesday April 14, 2009
Northern Territory towns have been placed as some of the top best places to live in Australia.
Alice Springs was the highest-ranked town in the Northern Territory coming in 13th place. Katherine is ranked 33rd. Mataranka finished at 37th, Jabiru at 51, Nguiu on Bathurst Island came in at 71 and Adelaide River 96th.
Jabiru, 220km east of Darwin, came in ahead of tourist havens such as Halls Gap in Victoria and Hervey Bay in Queensland - and its placement surprised some residents.
"Oh you're kidding," two residents commented.
But residents Gloria McKenzie, 60, who moved to Jabiru 22 years ago couldn't agree more.
"We love it here - we go fishing every week and there's a great little fishing club," she told the Northern Territory News.
Jabiru is home to one of Australia's quirkiest hotel - the crocodile-shaped Gagudju. There is also a large artificial lake, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a golf course.
