Darwin to Become More Energy Efficient With Electronic Cars
Friday April 3, 2009
Darwin may become an Australian leader for renewable energy initiatives as it prepares to deploy electronic cars.
A planning expert recently told the Planning Institute Australia's Northern Exposuer Conference in Darwin that electronic cars that store renewable energy will be on Darwin roads in the future.
Curtin University professor of Sustainability Peter Newman told the Northern Territory News that a "smart grid" for power could be developed for Darwin which would accept electricity from cars when they are not in use.
"You recharge at night, or when the sun is up, or the wind is blowing," he told the news.
"Then when you want to store it ... you plug in and the utility will pay you for your storage system."
He also told the Darwin conference that "plug-in electric vehicles are not just better for transport ... but they provide an opportunity for cities to become more renewable," he said.
"It's being developed worldwide but Australia is lagging."
