Northern Territory Networks Break Down

Tuesday April 7, 2009

The Northern Territory is suffering from two phone network failures ensuring mobiles, internet services and STD calls from landlines are out of operation.

Telstra's NT spokesman Mark Sweet told the Northern Territory News that people in the Top End can only communicate on their landlines if they are local calls after two "hardware failures" occurred.

The first failure happened near Kununurra, in Western Australia, just after midnight (AEST) when network traffic was redirected to an alternative fibre route through Marla, South Australia, he said.

But a second failure occurred in Marla about 1.30am and the issue has not been solved yet

"We are working hard to repair the issue to get services up and running as quickly as possible," Mr Sweet told the Northern Territory News.
Telstra are still working out what the problem is.

"We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused and are investigating what has caused the hardware failures."
