Darwin and Northern Territory Experience Coldest Spell Since Last Winter

Friday May 15, 2009

Darwin residents received an unexpected chill on Wednesday when temperatures sunk to that experienced on a winter's day in August last year.

Weather bureau forecaster Billy Lynch said the cold snap was a result of a high-pressure system in the south that pushed dry air into the Top End, to result in a temperature of 19.2C at 6.46am in Darwin yesterday.

The temperature fell from 23.9 on Monday to the 19 degrees figure on Wednesday, making for a 5 degrees drop in three days.

"It's a combination of dry air, clear skies and light winds," Mr Lynch told the Northern Territory News.

The majority of the Northern Territory south of Katherine also had their coldest morning for 2009 on Tuesday. Curtin Springs and Kulgera shared the lowest temperature, at 4 degrees.

Mr Lynch told the Northern Territory News that Darwin would have another cold morning on Thursday before it becomes humid on Friday.
