Darwin Prisoners Escape

Friday May 8, 2009

Two Northern Territory prisoners were on the loose in Darwin for about five hours yesterday.

The two men aged 18 and 20 were low security prisoners serving time at the Darwin Correctional Centre for property offences.

They were at the Water Gardens in Jingili doing community work when they made their getaway work at approximately 1.50pm.

A manhunt including 25 police and the dog squad began to try and capture them. Photos and physical descriptions of the men were also circulated around Darwin.

Police tracking dogs eventually sniffed out the offenders where they were caught by police officers hiding in bushes on Phillip Street near the Kurringal Flat, Fannie Bay, around 6.30pm last night.

Sergeant Greene Noble-Harris reported to the Northern Territory News they did not know how the men were able to walk away without being noticed by the working bee and requires an investigation.

Police said the prisoners would be interviewed and will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court for unlawfully escaping custody.
