Darwin's Old Hospital Site
Thursday June 11, 2009
The redevelopment of Darwin's old hospital site was altered yesterday and involves keeping the trees but removing the hedged maze, and will be moved to be adjacent to the buildings on Marina Boulevard.
When Planning Minister Delia Lawrie unveiled the revised concept master plan at the Larrakeyah site yesterday, she told the Northern Territory News that, "we have listened to the community and they wanted a less formal park.
"I didn't like the maze either, and I said so when I saw the first designs. You let your designers do their work and you go out to public consultations.
"I always thought there would be components of the original design work that the public would say they wouldn't like. We listened to that."
Over 80 per cent of the 8.7ha site would stay a tropical park that will soon feature public art, barbeque areas, shelters and a children's water play area.
The residential area was moved from the corner of Lambell Terrace, Schultze Street to Kahlin Avenue because neighbours complained the high rises (that are to reach eight storeys) would peer onto their backyards.
The plan is intended to be cost neutral because the Darwin development would be paid for by the sale of residential land.
