Darwin Without Power

Tuesday June 9, 2009

More than 24,000 homes and businesses lost power yesterday morning when a blackout struck Darwin suburbs Larrakeyah, Leanyer, Palmerston and Wulagi.

Power and Water spokeswoman Deb Whiteman told the Northern Territory News that all the power customers affected by the first, 6.44am blackout had their power back in approximately 20 minutes.

However Wulagi did not receive their power back until the afternoon. Ms Whiteman said this was because when it came back on in that suburb, the local network 'kiosk' overloaded and an equipment failure restricted power to "a few streets" in that area.

The first power outage was a result of a generator failure at the Channel Island power station.

Ms Whiteman said in Darwin that the system shut itself down because it an abnormal reading was registered on the generator's monitors. Power and Water workers were still investigating the cause of the problems yesterday and were unable to say what cause the power loss.
