Business Overview

Little Possums Play House is a long day care facility for children from 2 to 5. We have 55 places and are an approved child care centre. Our motto is "Childhood should not be Hurried" . Our premises were consructed in 1947 as government offices and have since been relocated and modified for its existing use. We have created an atmosphere reminiscent of grandma and grandpa's old house and backyard. We use organic and fresh produce to prepare all food on site including our own baking of bread, buscuits and cakes. See more at www.littlepossums.com.au

Little Possums Play House

· Is a Long Day Child Care Centre for 2 to 5 year olds. With 55 places including a limited number of half day places.

· Offers a nurturing environment for children to develop at their own pace

· Has a strong emphasis on understanding the environment through study of the indigenous seasons in song, festivals and outdoor events

Our Vision

At Little Possums Play House we have created a place where children can enjoy a wide range of life experiences. From structured and unstructured play to observing the daily routines of the fish, birds and animals around Little Possums. They will also be involved in the daily routines of cooking, gardening, cleaning and tidying and going for walks.

They will experience what it is to be part of a community. Many of our toys are made by the Darwin Pensioner’s Workshop and a local toy maker and the children will meet these older Territorians when they deliver toys to us. Much of our furniture is made at Kokoda Industries which is operated by the Handicapped Persons Association who will also assist us with some of our gardening.

The children will enjoy a range of organic foods provided by Greenies Real Foods and prepared on site by our experienced cooks including in house made bread and biscuits.

Di Lucas, an experienced naturalist will share her knowledge of bush tucker and the 6 seasons of the Top End as practiced by the local Indigenous people.

Our aim is to provide a range of experiences which will give the children skills for life in a safe and friendly environment; and enjoy themselves. Parents are always welcome to linger for a while when dropping off or picking up their children. While being tempted to spend the day with the children they can’t stay and must go to work each day.

We were first drawn to the Little Possums Play House from the name - what 3 or 4 year old wouldn't want to spend time at a place with a name like that! We also loved the refreshing approach to the offering itself, the philosophies and principles were very close to our own views and parenting choices. Initially we were a little concerned about Berrimah being a bit of a journey for us, but then I did a test run and was surprised to see that it was just 12kms and took only 15 mins door to door for us to make the journey. But the best endorsement is from our kids - they wake up daily and ask excitedly "Is it a Little Possums day today Mum?". When we arrive, they can't get out of the car and into the amazing venue quick enough - what more could a parent want for the care of their children?

Frequently Asked Questions

What other activities are available to the children? We have a number of non staff providers in areas of bush tucker and indigenous season and songs by Di Lucas, poetry by Waldo the Bush Poet, calisthenics with Lucy Reilly and a numberof other people telling stories and sharing music. We also hope to offer swimming lessons with qualified staff in the Wet Season. Do you presently have vacancies? Yes we have vacancies for full and half day care. A vacancy can be reserved by paying a $250 fee which if offset against the fees when the child starts. Where possible we match families so if they have part time care they have an ability to swap days with others in their group by direct arrangement with the other family. Are your children in seoparate age groups? No, we believe it is good to have mixed age groups for children's interaction. When the children participate in activities of different skill levels then we arrange the groups to recognise this. All the children mix with each other during our daily activities, some time in large and sometimes in small groups. Do you cater for special food requirements? Yes we do. We use all organic or fresh food in preparation of our meals and snacks. All bread, buscuits and cakes are baken using organic products on site. We also cater for all othe food need including gluten intolerance. Do you accept children younger than 3 years? Yes we will accept toilet trained children older than 2 years 6 months from start of term or on arrival in Darwin.
